Chapter 11 & 17 - questions for thought, terms to know

McLuhan's "Global Village" has arrived.

Consumers and media companiesare trying to keep up with accelerating technological change.

E-mail, the internet, instant messaging, and multi-function mobile phones are ubiquitous.

Video and fast broadband connections are turning up in more places.

Questions:

Digitization is reconfiguring most major media. Which high impact technological change do you anticipate next?

Which media will "converge" next? (e.g. on the iPad)

How will internet delivered media content be monetized?

How will global markets reconfigure the media industries (e.g. will advertising production be internationally outsourced in the same way as information technology services have been?)

What can an iPad do?

 ·       What will it be able to do?

·       What may it replace?

·       What are its effects?

How does new technology reshape the delivery of news and information?

Is detailed information and knowledge compatible with the new media environment, or must everything be simplified?

If new technology languages are difficult for most people to learn, what specialized services can be sold to them?

How have the changes in media re-shaped us?

·       Attention spans?

·       Immediate vs. long term goal orientation?

·       Instant gratification vs. patience and self-discipline?

·       How has childhood changed?
